In 1964, Harry Thornhill went to Liberia with the Peace Corps. Decades later, as a Global Studies teacher in New York, he dreamed of bringing his own family to share the West Africa he remembered.
When his sabbatical was approved, he, his wife Joan, and their three young boys—Mark (12), Kyle (10), and Ross (7)—packed their lives into trunks and moved to Kamakwie, a remote village in the interior of Sierra Leone.
